The U.S. Supreme Court Did Not Do What You Think the U.S. Supreme Court Did

I hate to be the wet blanket, but it's been a little depressing lately watching all of the supporters of marriage equality jumping up and down and crowing about how the United States Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8, and finally legalized same-sex marriage. As a supporter of marriage equality myself (in case you couldn't tell from my use of the phrase "marriage equality"), I'm obviously pleased that the Court did not vote to uphold either DOMA or Prop. 8... but the results are not as rosy as wishful thinking might make them look.

And it is unquestionably offensive to certain ultra-religious persons.

Not all, I hope, and not even most.
