Debt
Does anyone here have access to a TiVo (or possibly any other DVR, if they all work the same way)?

Y'see, you can tell TiVo to record lots of shows for you. And it will. And the next thing you know, you hit the little button and you've got 16 screens full of stuff that you do actually like, really, but just haven't had time to watch yet.

And all of a sudden watching these shows -- that you do actually like, remember -- becomes a sort of chore. You feel obligated to watch them, and soon, because if they sit there long enough TiVo will have to delete them to make room to record more recent shows.

And then, when you do finally set aside some time to watch some of them, and you can delete them yourself and free up some space, you feel a sense of accomplishment. That's right. Accomplishment.

From watching a television show.

A friend of mine calls this phenomenon "paying TiVo debt." As if every time your TiVo records something for you, you have made an implied promise to watch it, and you "owe" the TiVo an obligation to fulfill that promise.

You may be wondering why I'm bringing up this particular topic. You may also be wondering where the hell I've been for the past few months. The connection will be left as an exercise to the discerning reader. (If I still have any readers, that is.)

The short version: From now on, if when I get behind in my LJ reading, I hereby resolve not to go into Hibernation Mode, afraid even to log in for fear of feeling obliged to tackle the twenty+ pages of friends' posts that have accumulated since I last had time to read them.

Hi.

Bingo! That's me. YEs, my name is Kerri, and I'm addicted to TiVO and I even own a few shares of it's stock...

I swear the road to hell is paved with men and DVRs. HUMPF!

As far as I'm concerned, lumping us in with DVRs is probably a promotion.

Top Ten Reasons DVRs Are Better Than Men
10. You can have more than one DVR.
9. A DVR always remembers what you tell it to remember.
8. A DVR doesn't mind if you spend all day watching reality shows.
7. A DVR will actively help you spend all day watching reality shows.
6. A DVR doesn't get offended if you don't follow its suggestions.
5. It's okay to give a "thumbs down" to all sporting events.
4. A DVR never says, "Oh, come on. Another Brad Pitt movie?"
3. If you put something on your Wish List, a DVR will eventually get it for you.
2. A DVR doesn't get huffy when you ask it to repeat something it just showed you eight seconds ago.
And the #1 reason DVRs are better than men:
1. If it's not working the way you want, just get another one.

I even own a few shares of it's stock

That strikes me as a very clever gambit. It reminds me of the story of the woman who bought five or ten shares in companies like Coca-Cola and K-Mart because she used their products and services... and 70+ years later her heirs were millionaires.

(In wholly unrelated news this is one of the best things I've read on LiveJournal recently ever.)

Ah yeah. It was one of those things I wrote after someone (guy) broke my heart a year or two ago.

I did used to actually write in this silly LJ. Now, I'm embarrassed to admit, it's nothing more than drivel. No muse. No inspiration. Even the days of Ozy are gone. Humpf!

Love the Top 10 Reasons DVRs are better than Men. HAHA!

Thank you! *blush*

I suspect that, like many others, [info]ozy_y2k is at his funniest and most creative when he's miserable. So I suppose we must blame [info]lakilika for his recent lack of brilliance. But don't go changin', guys!
